Beyond Fear - Beyond Fear (SPV) - Back
After listening to the debut album from Beyond Fear for a little over a month now, it’s safe to say that Tim ‘Ripper’ Owens and Beyond Fear are here to create mayhemic destruction with their onslaught of brutal metal! There is no doubt in my mind that the debut Beyond Fear album will go down as one of the great metal albums of our time! Beyond Fear are: Tim ‘Ripper’ Owens (vocals), John Comprix (rhythm & lead guitar), Dwane Bihary (rhythm guitar), Dennis Hayes (bass) and Eric Elkins (drums). The debut album was recorded at Morrisound studios in Tampa Florida and was produced by Jim Morris who has done an amazing job. If you are a fan of Rippers previous work with Judas Priest and Iced Earth then you are going to love this album. If you have never heard any of Rippers previous work that doesn’t matter. This album is for heavy metal fans young and old. I thought the cover art was pretty cool, the raised horns are definitely appropriate in this case.

“Scream Machine” - Wow if the first song doesn’t have you thrashing your head up and down with proud metal horns raised to the roof then you have no right calling yourself a heavy metal fan. This is the only way this album could be opened, with amazing speed guitar solo’s, glass shattering screams from ripper, double bass work from hell and thunderous bass. This track reminds me of Judas Priest’s Painkiller in many ways and yet it takes on a life all of it’s self. This has all the ingredients for a classic metal track.

“And…You Will Die” - This is by far one of the best songs on the album and one of the best metal tracks I have heard in a long time. Everything about this song screams metal. Ripper is amazing on this one, those screams that we have loved all these years that Rob Halford delivered continue on in Ripper Owens. This is a fantastic track for metal heads of all ages. You will not be disappointed with this one I can promise!

“Save Me” - I loved the raw guitar intro on this track, once the rest of the rythem section came in this song just kicked me in the face. We’re only at track three and already I am having a problem saying what song is going to be the best on this album. I love the straight edge rock riffs this track delivers; it proves once again that you don’t need a million notes and chord changes to have a kick ass metal song. Ripper’s vocal ability never ceases to amaze me, on this track that is no different. I am a huge fan of everything this song brings to the album, melody, lyrics, metal screams and thumping bass!

“The Human Race” - I immediately thought of rippers work with Iced Earth hen this song started. I loved the double kick action throughout this one, the melodies are just amazing. Musically this is one of my favorites. I loved the lyrics and ripper does a great job as usual. This is a song for the head banger in all of us. If you can’t head bang to this song then you should be listening to rap music.

“Coming At You” - Silence, “do you see it, it’s coming at you” Boom! Wow great to hear Ripper open up a track with no music, the impact of the band coming in on this is awesome. No doubt metal fans around the world will be blasting this one. So far this is probably my least favorite song on the album, but that does not mean in any way that it’s a bad song. Every song on this album is so strong it’s hard to say this is a killer track after hearing the last four. You will still find yourself tapping the foot and playing air guitar to this one

“Dreams Come True” - This is the slowest track on the album. It reminded me once again of Rippers work with Iced Earth and has Iron Maiden written al over it. This I a very cool melodic track that probably won’t be loved by all metal fans, but those of us who can appreciate the lighter side of metal it’s a fantastic track with amazing harmonies. This is another track with very well written lyrics that you will find yourself singing along to.

“Telling Lies” - Another song with thumping bass and awesome drum work. There is a great guitar solo on this track and I can’t help but find myself singing along to this track every time I play it. This is one of my favorites on the album. Again another track with straightforward metal riffs that just hammer every time.

“I Don’t Need This” - This song probably is lyrically my favorite. I can guarantee you at first you will probably skip by this song but it will grow on you with every listen. I love the change that takes place mid song too, it reminds me of Black Sabbath but heavier. This is a great track well worth listening too a few times. Once this one hooks you, there’s no goin’ back.

“Words Of Wisdom” - Oh another song that just blows me away from the get go. I love the heaviness this song delivers both musically and vocally. This is my favorite song on the album. “I know you can’t be trusted, I just don’t give a damn”, what fantastic lyrics. This is a song you will be head banging to for years to come and no doubt you will be screaming right along side Ripper on this track. I can’t say enough good things about this song. You will find yourself repeating this track on many occasions.

“My Last Words” - This is probably one of my least favorite songs on the album. With so many strong songs on the album there was sure to be a couple of tracks that just wouldn’t do it for me. This is one of those songs. All though still very strong there are many other tracks I’d much rather play over hearing this one!

“Your Time Has Come” - This has one of those metal introductions that we have come to enjoy over the years from bands such as Testament and Slayer. Ripper excels vocally on this one. This is another of those tracks that you will be thrashing around your bedroom listening to. If you can’t piss off your parents or neighbors playing this one then something is wrong. This song is a must a full volume; there is no way you can play this one at a speaking level. Musically the melodies are brilliant; I loved each and every change that went along with this song. As the song progresses towards the end I couldn’t help but think of the outro to Faith No Mores Epic and The Eagles Hotel California. This is another song that stands out from the pack.

“The Faith” - What a way to finish what will go down as one of the greatest heavy metal albums of our time. This is a great track to close with, another metal masterpiece that I had no problem head banging to and another song that I found myself humming the melody to long after the album was over. I loved the lyrics to this one too. A killer track with amazing guitar work for those inspiring players!

This is an album that must be apart of every heavy metal fans collection. The album is out now through SPV. Make sure you grab your copy where all things METAL are sold. This album is sure to go down in metal history. Since the day I got this album I have had it in heavy rotation and it’s safe to say when you purchase a copy you will do the same metal fans!
