I was kinda surprised to see Clawfinger
on Nuclear Blast Records. That’s not a bad thing. However, they have
a little more of a commercial sound than just about every band on their
roster. Don’t let that discourage you if you haven’t heard “Hate
Yourself With Style” yet. Clawfinger have a nu metal sound with a
little thrash. A bunch of bands come to mind including Dope, old Korn, Coal
Chamber, Godsmack, old Stained, and even old Metallica. The guitars sound
down-tuned…probably drop D, at least some sort slack tuning. Using
this technique it gives their music an extra heaviness that also adds to
their style. This creates quite a few cool riffs for Clawfinger, some with
a thrashy sound. “Hate Yourself With Style” is probably the
heaviest disc they have put out, and I always appreciate a band trying to
be a little heavier. I can’t help but think that it seems that the
whole disc was geared for the radio. Having a radio vibe like this should
help the band get more exposure. Tracks like “Dirty Lies,” “Breakout
(Embrace The Child Inside Your),” and “Right To Rape”
sound like a radio tunes. The choruses are what do it; they are commercial
sounding.
