Dark Funeral - Attera Totus Sanctus (Candlelight Records) - Back
The gods of speed-driven blasphemy are back with a new opus. Over the years Dark Funeral has earn the reputation of being one of the fastest brands of black metal. Extreme speed driven black metal is what they are all about. Insane blast beats are trademarks as are the rapid, fire-blazing riffs. I was lucky enough to have seen them on their trek over to the U.S. a few years ago at New England Metal and Hardcore Festival. They had a great stage presence and were the talk of the evening…it was quite a performance. Anyhow, that amazing furious pace they play at is demonstrated in the first track “King Antichrist.” One of the best tunes on the disc and definitely a great way to start off a new album! It continues with “666 Voices Inside”, and other worthy tunes like “Angel Flesh Impaled” and “Final Ritual.” Vocals seem a little more on the raw or experimental side than previous, not like that is a bad thing. There is more variation in his voice, which kind of goes along with the different variations the music presents; it’s a more fresh sound. A couple noteworthy people helped out with this disc. Gustav Helm (ex-Meshuggah) from their home country of Sweden makes a guest appearance on the album. And Daniel Bergstrand produced the disc, so you can see it was in good hands. No cheap one minutes songs on this disc. Eight tracks, that each last between four and half and six minutes in length, total for nearly forty-three minutes and were recorded at Dug Out Studios. In my opinion this is up there with their better albums. If you are a true black metal fan or one of Dark Funeral’s unholy horde I highly recommend this record.
