Excalion – Primal Exhale (Sound Riot Records) - Back
I still find it hard to believe that “Primal Exhale” is Excalion’s first album. The caliper of the music is impressive for a debut. I’d say this is as least as good as Stratovarius’ latest albums, if not better. Could this possibly be the next Stratovarius? These Finnish metalers have many years ahead of them, they are only in their early to mid twenties, so I guess in time we will see. Anyhow, this disc filled me with energy. The energy in the music is hard to ignore, this is so full of life! “Primal Exhale” is power metal that is melodic and symphonic, or progressive and aggressive. Some of your favorite traits from Stratovarius, Nightwish, Sonata Arctica, Dream Theater and a few others comprise Excalion’s sound. Powerful singing vocals, excellent musicianship, and the band is tight as hell. They have a complete and full sound. Nothing seems to be missing from their songs and there isn’t anything that needs to be filled in either. Fifty minutes of symphonic power metal separated into nine tracks. None of the tunes are boring; “Primal Exhale” is an overall solid album. You need to introduce yourself to this band if you are into power metal.
