The official start of the Italian band Melencolia
Estatica occurred only a couple years ago in 2004 and this CD is a self-titled
debut. Call it what you want, but it’s somewhere in the traditional
melancholic black metal range. Extreme is another good way to describe it.
Their forlorn sound resonates all over this disc. You may find them comparable
to Epoch of Unlight, old Emperor, old Dimmu Borgir, Amon Amarth, Burzum,
and old Katatonia. All elements seem to be meant to be together. Demonic
vox work perfect for this band. Enthusiast, fast-paced and blackened melodies
and demanding blast beats are important for this band’s technique.
Also, the absence of keyboards helps them keep their sound more abrasive.
This isn’t polished like symphonic black metal bands of today, rather
the production screams black metal without the productions quality being
to hard to listen to. The songs are listed as Meditatios, as in…Mediatio
I, II, III, and IV. All four tracks are pleasing for a person with a real
black metal ear. If you consider yourself a true fan of black metal or extreme
metal, then you must let your ears bleed to this! It’s worth the loss
of blood and hearing!
